![]() CAREER FLASHPlan your path to learningby Sharon Aschaiek
Toronto Sun Education and career planning in Ontario will receive a significant boost with the introduction of an innovative new Web site, CareerMatters. "I think one of our biggest focuses is to allow users to come to the site and see what their choices are, and to gain information to put together a learning path for them," says Carol Tisshaw, project leader. Developed by TVOntario in conjunction with the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, and sponsored by the Bank of Montreal, CareerMatters is a comprehensive resource to educational opportunities in Ontario. Whether you're just entering high school and deciding what courses your should take, exploring post secondary options, or have been out of school for a while and are looking to update your education, CareerMatters has the resources to help you make your decision. "It's geared toward the teenage demographic, but we know that for people who haven't finished high school, and their research and literacy skills are not as well-honed, they will benefit from the info on the site," says Sarah Irwin, managing director of e-learning at TVOntario. Users have access to information about hundreds of different careers in the province, with many descriptions featuring videos of individuals talking about their job. Each description also includes details about the kind of high school and post secondary courses required for the job. Once they've identified what they want to do, they can then investigate educational choices by grades, regions, subjects or industry areas to find courses that are relevant to them. CareerMatters will also feature useful resources for career counsellors and youth workers, parents, and lifelong learners seeking to update their skills in a changing work environment. The site, which will be accessible online at www.tvo.org, will become active on March 27. Says Tisshaw: "It's building blocks you are providing for people, and the exciting thing is you can progress through the site and see the different options you have to take."
