Great businesses are built by challenging the status quo. "I saw a market need for singles who were sick of the bar scene or tired of being set up by friends," entrepreneur Travis Hartley says. Hartley owns Meet Market Adventures (www.meetmar ketadventures.com), a tour company for singles. It organizes and facilitates fun and exciting activities for singles in a group environment, such as learning events, parties, and local and international tours. A refreshing alternative to traditional dating services that "pair" single people, Meet Market Adventures simply provides an avenue for busy single professionals to meet while enjoying amazing events and adventures. "Our service is for active singles who don't have the time to play as hard as they work," Hartley says. "We follow a pay-as-you-play philosophy so we don't charge membership or sign-up fees." Meet Market Adventures is not a dating service. The company's goal is to bring together singles with common interests and let nature run its course. In just six short years, the company has grown rapidly to include 55,000 members and franchises in Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver, Chicago, Philadelphia and New York. The company was also recently ranked one of Profit Magazine's Fastest Emerging Growth Companies. Hartley says he became an entrepreneur because he wanted to build a company to call his own. "As my own boss, I get to see the results of my efforts, time and drive," he says. To Hartley, the risks associated with owning a business are justified by the unlimited rewards. Hartley has two main recommendations for new entrepreneurs: Give your customers exceptional service and hire great people. "Customers are your bread and butter so you need to make sure that they are getting the most value for their money," he says. "Your employees are just as important," Hartley adds. "They're like billboards for your company; if they are outgoing, talented and love their jobs, they will always speak highly of your business and add to your overall success."
