Free training program gives youth taste of success

By -- Special to the Toronto Sun

Giving youth the ingredients needed to become self-reliant and launch a successful career in culinary arts is the focus of a free pre-apprenticeship program.

The assistant cook pre-apprenticeship training and employment program is accepting applications from youth aged 16 to 29 years who have completed Grade 10 and like to work with their hands in a fast-paced environment.

It's funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and is being delivered in partnership with Second Base Youth Shelter and George Brown College.

Thirty successful applicants will receive 22 weeks of free training and academic upgrading through George Brown College. They'll receive safety training and complete their Safe Food Handling Certification.

In the end, they'll have completed their Level 1 Apprenticeship In-School Curriculum and will hone their skills through an eight-week paid work placement in the restaurant and culinary arts industry. School supplies, kitchen tool kit, transportation and lunches are provided.

The 30-week program begins March 23 at Second Base Youth Shelter at 702 Kennedy Rd., Scarborough, located within walking distance of the Kennedy TTC station.
